Opportunities for Youth Farmers

Note: Youth Farmers must be accompanied by an adult member to participate in the program.

Financial Support through USDA Youth Loans

The USDA Youth Loan Program helps young individuals launch and operate small-scale agricultural projects. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain business experience, build independence, and develop essential farming skills.

Eligible Projects Include:

Buying livestock, seeds, equipment, or tools
Renting or repairing necessary farm equipment
Covering operating expenses for agricultural projects

Loan Requirements & Eligibility:

Loan Details:

Project Requirements:

Must generate enough income to repay the loan, including interest
Should be agriculture-related and educational in nature
Must be part of an organized program (e.g., 4-H, FFA, Tribal youth groups)

Applicant Requirements:

Must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified legal resident
No history of controlled substance convictions
No unresolved debt issues or previous financial losses to the government

Maximum Loan Amount: $5,000
Repayment Terms: 1 to 7 years, depending on the project and loan amount
Interest Rate: Same as USDA’s Direct Operating loan rate, offering applicants the lower rate available at approval or closing.
